Welcome to the Scientific Odyssey website, where we are excited to support Northern Utah homeschoolers with innovative and engaging science labs, taught by a local science teacher. These labs are tied to the Utah Science Standards but are brought right to your home or co-op. Our program is designed specifically for students between the ages of 10-16. We offer hands-on experiences that ignite curiosity and foster a deeper understanding of scientific concepts. Courses Offered

Laws of Motion (ages 10-15) $60 per student - 2 hours

  • Develop your child’s critical thinking and problem-solving skills with our engaging Laws of Motion course. This introduction to physics encourages students to explore the principles of motion and forces through hands-on challenges and creative design. By analyzing real-world scenarios, building models, and engineering solutions, students will deepen their understanding of inertia, acceleration, and action-reaction while fostering curiosity and a passion for discovery. Perfect for budding scientists and engineers, this course lays the foundation for lifelong learning in physics and beyond.


  • What will be covered:

    • Contact forces

    • The three laws: inertia, acceleration, action/reaction

    Activities & Labs offered:

    • 6 stations of activities for the 1st law of motion

    • A bowling lab for the 2nd law

    • An engineering activity for the 3rd law

    • Assessment at the end of class with the option of having it be a take home and parents giving it later

  • The following standards are embedded into the class:

    7th Grade: 7.1.1, 7.1.2, 7.1.3

    High School Physics: PHYS 1.1, PHYS 1.3

  • What is included in the cost:

    • Travel expenses

    • 30 minutes prior to schedule class time for set up

    • Answer key for parents if course is for a grade

    What is needed:

    • Decent floor space for bowling lab (not real bowling balls fyi) - hallways are perfect 

    • Table/counter space

Intro to Chemistry (ages 12-16) $90 per student - available in either two sessions for 1.5 hours each or one class for 3 hours

  • Spark a lifelong love of science with our dynamic Intro to Chemistry course. Through hands-on experiments and creative activities, students will explore atoms, molecules, and the periodic table while uncovering the science behind physical and chemical changes. Designed to inspire curiosity and build foundational knowledge, this course brings chemistry to life with engaging labs and interactive lessons which covers numerous Utah science standards.

  • What will be covered:

    • A basic overview of the Periodic Table

    • Atoms & Molecules

    • Properties & Physical & Chemical Changes

    • Conservation of Mass

    Activities & Labs offered:

    • Building models of molecules

    • Sketching models of atoms

    • Energy & Density Activity

    • Stations of Chemical & Physical Changes

    • Practice writing & balancing equations

    • Assessment at the end of class with the option of having it be a take home and parents giving it later

  • Utah Science Standards covered*:

    6th Grade: 6.2.1, 6.2.2, 6.2.3, 6.2.4

    8th Grade: 8.1.1, 8.1.2, 8.1.3, 8.1.5, 8.1.6

    High School Chemistry: CHEM 1.1, CHEM 1.5, CHEM 2.1, CHEM 3.3, CHEM 3.6

The Chemistry of Life (ages 12-16). $90 per student - available in either two sessions for 1.5 hours each or one class for 3 hours

  • Unlock the secrets of life’s most essential processes with our engaging intermediate course, The Chemistry of Life. This unique class bridges biology and chemistry, delving into the reactions behind photosynthesis and cellular respiration. Through advanced labs and experiments, students will alter variables, analyze outcomes, and gain a deeper understanding of these vital processes. Designed to inspire curiosity and critical thinking, this course offers a hands-on exploration of biology’s foundations, fostering a true appreciation for the intricacies of life.


  • What will be covered:

    • Photosynthesis 

    • Cellular Respiration

    • Chemical equations & reactions

    • Developing an experiment

    Activities and Labs offered:

    • Leaf lab for Photosynthesis

    • Yeast lab for Cellular Respiration

    • Altering the labs to compare results with the control 

    • Graphing, analyzing data, & presenting their findings

    • Using models to create the chemical equations

    • Assessment at the end of class with the option of having it be a take home and parents giving it later

  • Utah Science Standards covered*: 

    8th Grade: 8.3.1, 8.3.2

    High School Biology: BIO 1.1, BIO 1.2, BIO 1.3

    What is needed:

    • Cupboards or dark area for photosynthesis lab

Experimental Design (ages 12-16) available in a three hour course for $90 or three, two hour classes for $180

  • Empower your student to think like a scientist with our advanced Experimental Design course. This class challenges learners to approach problems critically, ask meaningful questions, and design innovative solutions. By engaging in hands-on investigations and data analysis, students will hone their ability to think systematically and communicate their findings effectively. By the end of the course, students will feel significantly more confident in designing and conducting an experiment on their own. With a focus on developing higher-level reasoning and practical scientific skills, this course prepares aspiring scientists to tackle real-world challenges with confidence and curiosity.

  • What will be covered:

    • The scientific method 

    • Developing a testable question

    • Pre-lab set up (question, hypothesis, variables, procedures)

    • Experiment design & write-up (qualitative vs quantitative data)

    • Post-experiment analysis (experimental errors, graphing, claim, evidence reasoning on trends or outliers, conclusion)

    Activities and Labs offered in the one 3 hour session:

    • Practice with each step of the experimental design

    • Doing a simple experiment and write up

    • Presenting findings

  • Utah Science and Engineering Practices covered**:

    • Asking questions or defining problems

    • Planning and carrying out investigations

    • Analyzing and interpreting data

    • Using mathematics and computational thinking

    • Constructing explanations and designing solutions

    • Engaging in argument from evidence

    • Obtaining, evaluating, and communicating information

    ** These practices are required in the state of Utah for all grades

About the company

JennaMarie Harris has been a licensed Science Teacher for 10 years and holds a B.S. in Biology Education from Corban University and M.S. in Earth Science from the University of Utah. She grew up homeschooled through high school and the best part of her homeschooled experience was taking a microbiology and genetics course through a nearby college. Jenna has coached Science Olympiad for eight years and has helped her team win state. She also developed and taught an Experimental Design course she hopes to provide for homeschool middle and high school students.
